چکیده

3 years old lady presented with complaints of painful blisters on the right lower face, ulcers in the mouth and severe right otalgia of 24 hours duration. She had burning sensation in the skin near the lower lip two days prior to the appearance of the blisters. Examination revealed vesicular eruptions with clear fluid on right half of face involving the cheek, chin and lower lip (Figure 1) . ora l examinat ion revealed multiple shallow mucosal ulcers ganglia.1 The incidence of Herpes zoster increases with age and immunosuppression.2 The most commonly affected cranial nerves are trigeminal and facial nerve due to reactivation of HZV latent in the gasserian and geniculate ganglia. The ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve is affected several times more frequently than the second or third divisions.3 Early diagnosis and prompt treatment with antiviral drugs is the mainstay of management.

Herpes zoster mandibularis.

A case of Herpes zoster of the mandibular nerve in an 80 year old man is reported. Herpes zoster infection affecting only the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve is rare. It is proposed that the distribution of lesions is a consequence of a unique latent site of the virus within neurons of the gasserian ganglion innervating the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.

Herpes zoster (shingles) is caused by reactivation of the latent varicella zoster virus which is present due to an earlier varicella infection (chicken-pox). Herpes Zoster is a less common and endemic disease than varicella, although factors causing reactivation are still not well known, but it occurs in older and/or immunocompromised individuals. Involvement of C3, T5, L1, L2 and first divisio...

Mandibular osteonecrosis following herpes zoster infection in the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve: a case report and literature review

Herpes zoster virus (HZV) infections are caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus. Reactivation symptoms commonly affect the thoracolumbar trunk, and rarely affect the mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve. When the mandibular branches are involved, lesions appear proximal to the innervation area. This condition may be associated with exfoliation of the teeth and osteonecrosis...
